Lego PlayStation 1 leak suggests a 1,900-piece mega build and December release date

We could be getting a Lego PlayStation 1 for Christmas, if leaks wind up being true.

Arcade machines and consoles already make up some of the best Lego sets for retro fans, but it looks as though we're finally moving into the disc era according to rumors. Instagram leaker lego_minecraft_goat suggests that a "Lego PlayStation 1" model with the console and controller is due to launch in December for $159.99, and it'll be a for-adults display model.

If the Lego PS1 exists, it'll be far from Lego's first gaming remake. At the time of writing, there are two up for grabs; the Game Boy (which is around $60 at Amazon) and the Lego Pac-Man Arcade (also available at Amazon). The Lego NES can also be found if you're willing to put in some work, but it's trickier to track down due to being a retired set.

More specifically, the post suggests that the set will include "at least the controller and the console," suggesting that more goodies could be featured. Judging by previous kits based on consoles (like the Lego Atari 2600), I wouldn't be surprised if it featured game cases with mini-builds based on iconic PS1 games like Wipeout, or opened up to reveal scenes from those franchises.

Obviously, it's important that we take this with a pinch of salt. The product hasn't been confirmed yet, and I'm not seeing it referenced by other leakers. However, lego_minecraft_goat does seem to have a good track record – they successfully pre-empted real products like the Lego Ford Model T and Daily Bugle kit for Spider-Man. With that in mind, I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. Sony has already worked extensively with Lego on models like the Lego Horizon Forbidden West Tallneck, so it's not like this is going out on a limb. Lego has also been dabbling in console remakes recently, with the Lego Sega Mega Drive controller dropping as a gift-with-purchase.

In terms of how long it'll take to find out more, I'd say we're unlikely to get an announcement for a few months yet beyond teases. If Lego K-Pop Demon Hunters or the just-revealed Lego Super Mario minifigures are any indication, it'll be a while before the curtain is fully pulled back. It was months before the Lego Game Boy model was unveiled following its initial tease, for example.

As soon as I hear anything else, I'll give you a heads up.

For more collectibles, don't miss the best toys. As for retro-goodness, why not check out the best retro consoles?
