Leggings, which were in fashion about 10 years ago, have gained popularity again. There are many leggings that are made of unique fabrics or have distinctive designs, and there are more ways of wearing them.
Leggings mainly refer to tights-like pants made of stretchy fabric. According to Ai Takahashi, a stylist who authored "Mayowanai Oshare" (Unwavering fashion) published by Wave Publishers Co., the length of leggings determines the impression they make and how they are worn.
Recently, three-quarter length or slightly longer leggings have been popular. They go well with short garments such as tunics, short pants and miniskirts, making the outfit more casual and cheerful.

Ankle-length leggings have also been conspicuous recently. "Wearing such leggings with long skirts or dresses is this year's trend," Takahashi said.
Black makes legs look lean

Various colors of leggings are available in stores, with black leggings particularly coming in handy. They are very versatile and make legs look lean.
Leggings usually give a casual impression. But, according to Takahashi, if you choose clothes with a slimline silhouette, namely to emphasize a long, thin, vertical line, outfits look chic. The style has other benefits such as making the wearer look taller and leaner.
In addition, matching shiny tops and shoes with leggings creates a feminine or mature impression, Takahashi said.
For example, if you match black leggings with a shiny shirt and below-the-knee tight purple skirt, a breezy impression is added to the elegant and chic coordinates.
Leggings also go well with striped shirt dresses. Silver sandals make the outfit look gorgeous. Having part of the leggings visible is a trendy way of wearing them.
It is also good to wear leggings with long flared skirts or oversized dresses.
Many leggings are reasonably priced and can be washed easily, which gives them a practical aspect. "With leggings, you can easily make variations in your everyday clothes, so please try them," Takahashi said.
Mix and match
This season, many leggings featuring designs are on offer. According to the sock and underwear store chain operator Tutuanna Co., ribbed leggings, priced at 1,500 yen plus tax, are popular at their stores.
For ribbed leggings that are longer than ordinary, it is recommended to wear them by bunching the extra material around the ankles.
There are two colors: gray and white. "Gray matches well with various colors, while not giving a heavy impression like black leggings. White leggings go well with pale colors such as beige skirts, which makes an outfit look sharp," said Yuri Shimoda, an official in charge of public relations of the company.
Leggings with white side stripes, priced at 1,500 yen plus tax, give an active impression. You can make your outfit look sporty by wearing them with a simple long T-shirt dress.
Tulle lace leggings, priced at 1,800 yen plus tax, create a cool atmosphere thanks to the translucent fabric. Since the design is unique, it can add an accent to summer outfits, which tend to be simple.
