Legendary music shop Tower Records relaunches as online store

Legendary music shop chain Tower Records has risen from the dead to relaunch as an online store - 14 years after it disappeared off the radar.

At its peak the chain - famous for its iconic iconic red and yellow sign - had over 200 stores across the globe, including a huge shop on Argyle Street next to the Hielanman's Umbrella.

The Glasgow store, which closed back in 2002, is fondly remembered by music fans not just for its size and selection but also for the famous impromptu Bon Jovi concert in June 1995, which saw the city centre grind to a halt as more than 5,000 fans filled Argyle Street to catch the rock band in action.

The new online store will feature more than 500,000 titles on vinyl, CD, and cassette, plus exclusive merchandise and the latest in music on Pulse, an online version of their old Tower Pulse! tabloid magazine, which contained record reviews, interviews and advertising.

About the company's return, Tower Records’ new CEO Danny Zeijdel said: “[The news] has been met with tremendous success, feedback. A lot of people are so happy taking pictures of when they receive an order from Tower Records, posting it on Instagram.”

The new platform for Tower Records, which was founded back in California in 1960, will also feature livestream performances.

Sadly, it doesn't look like the Argyle Street branch will open again any time soon - and that's a crying shame as the building lies derelict and still at risk - but for Glaswegians of a certain age, it's nice to see the old brand back in action, even digitally.
