A legendary Manchester music venue has been nominated for a prestigious award.
Night and Day Cafe, on Oldham Street in the Northern Quarter, has been recognised for its contribution to the city’s music scene with the nod. It’s up for Music Week magazine’s ‘Grassroots Venue: Spirit of the Scene’ award.
The publicly-decided gong, which is ‘supported by Music Venue Trust’, recognises the important of grassroots venues to their cities. Along with Night and Day, other iconic stages have been recognised.

Night and Day is Manchester’s hope of winning, with other northern venues like Brudenell Social Club in Leeds, The Globe in Newcastle, and Sheffield’s Leadmill all making the 10-strong shortlist. The nominees are spread across the country.
Other include the Boileroom in Guildford, Dubrek Studios in Derby, Glasgow’s iconic King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut — where Oasis were discovered — Le Pub in Newport, the Trinity Centre in Bristol and the Windmill in Brixton.

Recently, Night and Day was a host of Independent Venue Week, which in-house promoter Reece Ritchie says was ‘incredibly important’ for the bar during the cost-of-living crisis. He added: “I don’t want to say it’s more important than ever, but shining a light on venues is more important than ever.
“Independent Venue Week is a really good way of going about it, but the support they give is always going to be needed — and it’s incredibly important we continue to do things like this.”
The award is decided by a public vote, which closes at the end of the month. You can vote online here.
