Legendary Manchester United striker backs Anthony Martial as Juan Mata considers his future

Welcome to the Manchester Evening News United On My Mind daily-round-up.

Here are some of the Manchester United stories you may have missed from the past 24 hours, featuring former United striker Teddy Sheringham showing support for Anthony Martial and Juan Mata assessing his options ahead of the January transfer window...

Sheringham backs Martial

In an interview with the Daily Mail, former United hitman Sheringham has criticised the club's handling of Martial.

The Frenchman has only played 190 minutes of football so far this season, and Sheringham has claimed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer isn't giving him the support he needs.

"It's similar to Harry Kane and Tammy Abraham, centre-forwards need to be loved," Sheringham said. 'If you're not feeling loved and appreciated, if you feel you have one chance to do well in the Carabao Cup and if you don't you're not going to get anywhere near the Premier League games, it does put pressure on you."

The former England international went on to claim that Solskjaer's handling of Martial has had a direct impact on his poor performances of late.

"When you are loved by a manager, you have that feeling," he added. "Martial obviously isn't getting that at the moment because there are other players at the club in front of him and you feel like you have to snatch chances when you can."

It's safe to say that with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Edinson Cavani and Mason Greenwood ahead of him in the pecking order, Martial has got a huge job on his hands if he's to break into the starting XI.

Dortmund put off by Martial valuation

While Sheringham is desperate to see more of Martial at United, it seems the club are planning for life without the France international.

Eurosport reported earlier this month that United would be willing to cut ties with Martial, with the club hoping to generate as much as £40 million from the sale.

Sport1 claim that Borussia Dortmund have been monitoring Martial, though they're unwilling to match United's asking price and have now starting exploring other options including Nice's Kasper Dolberg.

United are likely to have to drop their asking price if they want to sell Martial, so a possible deal with Dortmund may not be out of the question just yet.

Juan Mata possibly on his way out

Mata is reportedly considering his future at the club having struggled to break into the United starting XI since the arrival of Bruno Fernandes.

The Daily Star claim the Spaniard is assessing his options, while The Sun report that Mata could be on the move as soon as January.

Mata may be struggling to make an impression on the pitch, but his influence off the pitch is still felt at United. He's respected immensely by his peers, with Fernandes recently claiming of the 33-year-old: "He [Mata] is an example on and off the pitch."
