Legendary Liverpool fan's final farewell to Anfield in LFC hearse

A lifelong Liverpool FC fan was laid to rest today as his funeral procession paused outside Anfield's famous Shankly Gates.

Wally Williams, a LFC fan who started supporting the Reds in the 1930s, was laid to rest today after he died aged 94 in September. The Kop season ticket holder was born a stone's throw from Anfield in 1928 and went on to be one of the club's most loyal and passionate fans.

Speaking previously to the ECHO, Wally's son Colin paid tribute to his late dad calling him "a bit of a legend at Anfield ". Colin said his dad loved to see the success the club had enjoyed in recent years, as well as the glory days of the 1970s and 80s.

Colin added: "His best memory of a vast amount of games was the European Cup final in 1977 in Rome and travelling by train over several days to get there." Wally will also be remembered by his five other children: Glenys, David, Ann, Ken and Sandra.

In a moving funeral procession today, Friday, October 7, Wally's hearse stopped outside Anfield's famous Shankly Gates. The hearse was bright red with a Liverpool FC badge on the back window.

A number of people gathered outside ground to applaud Wally's hearse. A banner with Wally's name on was tied to railings in front of the Kop.

Tributes poured in for the "legend of Anfield" in the days following his death. Allan Bates said: "A privilege to have known him, a great man who loved this club, also a good friend who will be sadly missed amongst our community QGFC (Quarry Green Football Club, in Kirkby) and Quarry Green Club. RIP Wally Kop Legend. YNWA."

Les Lawson, chair of the Merseyside branch of the LFC official supporters' club and a friend of Wally, said: "Wally used to sit in row 27 in block 104 of the Kop and was one of the great characters of the Reds' support.

"Wally had to stop going during last season as he had problems with his legs but he continued to support the Reds with the same enthusiasm he always did. My thoughts are with Wally's family and friends at this sad time."
