Legendary horse racing trainer and punter Barney Curley dies aged 81

Former horse racing trainer and legendary punter Barney Curley has died aged 81.

The Fermanagh native was the man behind perhaps the greatest betting coups of all time in Yellow Sam.

Curley one the equivalent of £1.4 million in today's value in the 1975 gamble, and went on to train his first winner in 1984 I'm Incommunicado, ridden by Willie Mullins, won at Naas.

As a trainer, Curley worked with jockeys such as Frankie Dettori, Jamie Spencer, Tom Queally, Tommy Carmody and Declan Murphy until 2012, with a Magic Combination win in the 2000 Newmarket Imperial Cup among the highlights.

Curley set up the Direct Aid for Africa charity in Zambia in 1996, working to improve healthcare and Education in the country.
