Legendary Edinburgh theme bar closes down as owners pledge to launch new pub

The popular Edinburgh themed pub Lebowskis has officially closed down, it has been revealed.

The boozer on Morrison Street shut down last March and punters throughout Edinburgh were hoping the days of White Russians and burgers, with a side of pacifism, were not gone forever.

However, Edinburgh Live can exclusively reveal that the Haymarket premises will not be opening their doors again.

The brewers Greene and King, who own the site, confirmed that a new premises would be opening at the site soon.

They have rented the site to tenants in the past but it is expected the new pub will be on their own establishments.

No name for the new pub has been decided yet, and the opening date is still to be confirmed too.

It is believed The Dude abides by this decision.

Speaking to Edinburgh Live, he said: "Strikes and gutters, ups and downs.."

Lebowskis first opened in Edinburgh in 2009, following the opening of their first premises in Glasgow in 2007.

The boozer become something of an institution with locals who enjoyed the laid back vibe of the themed establishment.

The bar even made their own unique Scottish version of the White Russian, called: 'The Gutter Ball,' using a certain famous ingredient.

Director Graham Suttle explained last year that they came close to shutting down both the Lebowskis pubs, and other bars they ran.

He said: "We had some tough calls and decisions to make and before the government furlough scheme was introduced, we were looking at a complete and utter shutdown, the business simply wouldn’t have survived, there just wasn’t the the cash flow to keep us all going - including myself and my business partner - and our families and mortgages, it was hugely stressful."

He had hoped to retain all his staff and "get the family back together" but unfortunately Edinburgh Lebowskis is no more.

Edinburgh Live will bring you news of the new pub opening at the location when it becomes available.
