Legendary Edinburgh fundraiser Tom Gilzean laid to rest as crowds applaud funeral cortege

Crowds lined Prince's street in Edinburgh and remembered  Tom Gilzean as the legendary fundraiser's funeral procession past through the city this afternoon.

Hundreds of mourners applauded the funeral cortege as it made its way through the city's main thoroughfare.

The emotional farewell began at St Mary’s cathedral in York Place with well wishers coming together to pay tributes to the inspirational charity collector.

His son Douglas gave an emotional speech at the service, saying: "To our family he was just a loving dad.

"He was so passionate about collecting for charities. We used to tell him not to go out in the rain but he did and said it wasn't raining when he went out."

The funeral procession stopped momentarily outside the Marks and Spencers on Princes Street to allow M&S staff and mourners to pay respects to Tom at one of his favourite collecting spots.

As a mark of respect Edinburgh’s Christmas market also came to a halt as Tom Gilzean's funeral cortege past along Princes Street.

The procession then proceeded up North Bridge before arriving at Mount Vernon cemetary.

A Bugler played the Last Post while pallbearers from the Royal Engineer Sappers provided a guard of honour at the gravesite.

The legendary fundraiser passed away at the age of 99 at the beginning of the month, at the veterans' hospital Erskine House.

He had been hurt following a  fall at the York Place tram stop in August , earlier this year.

The war veteran spent decades shaking his tin in the  city centre  collecting donation for the Sick Kids hospital, raising an impressive £1 million for good causes - he was even honoured  with an Oor Wullie statue  as recognition for his fundraising efforts.
