Legendary Edinburgh city centre shoe shop to close down as customers share memories

Edinburgh shoppers were disappointed to hear that a legendary shoe shop is closing down.

Barnets Shoes on the Royal Mile had initially advertised Spring sales earlier in the year and were offering 60 per cent, now 80 per cent, discounts on their entire range.

However, the property has now been put on the market by estate agents, Whitelaw Baikie Figes, and the ground and first floors of the shop at 7 High Street are available to let.

Upon hearing the news old customers lined up online to mourn the loss of another Edinburgh high street shop disappearing.

Many said they used to visit the shop to buy their Dr Marten boots.

One said: “Great shoe shop. Many purchases over the years. A sad loss, one more Edinburgh institution gone forever.”

Another said: “Been there for at least 65 years. That’s a big loss for a historic point of view. Same family, over half a century, now going to be archives.”

And one added: “I worked there as a ‘Saturday boy’ from 1985 til around 1990. Great experience selling DMs, Pods, Kickers, Adidas Sambas, Loakes etc. Not unusual to have a punk sitting next to a Mod and a Tweed clad countryside type.”

Whitelaw Baikie Figes are advertising the property with rental offers in excess of £50,000 per annum.

They say that the shop is located within the “city’s premier tourist district.”

A spokesperson said: “The property is situated in High Street within Edinburgh’s historic Old Town, with High Street forming part of the Royal Mile the city’s premier tourist district leading from Edinburgh Castle and Holyrood Palace ensuring strong levels of footfall throughout the year.

“Nearby retailers are a good mix of multiple and local traders to include House Of Cashmere, Elgin Cashmere, The Museum of Childhood, Neon Sheep and a number of other retailers who will be attractive to tourists.”
