Legendary DJ Steve Sutherland tragically dies as Trevor Nelson leads tributes

Legendary DJ Steve Sutherland has tragically died.

The iconic selector gained a huge following for his shows on radio stations Choice FM and Galaxy FM - just two highlights of a glittering career.

A pivotal figure in the black British music scene, Sutherland won four MOBO awards, his first in 2000 where he was recognised as the Best Club DJ.

Reacting to the news of his passing, the awards' official Twitter handle said they were "deeply saddened" to hear the sad news.

They wrote: "We are deeply saddened to hear the news of DJ Steve Sutherland’s passing.

"His contribution to the Black British Music scene will never be forgotten."

Sutherland had seven of his 12 ‘live’ studio albums reach the Top 40 charts and gave a platform for styles such as hip-hop to 2-step on his shows.

As a broadcaster, the DJ sat down to chat with megastars such as Janet Jackson and Alicia Keys.

Many of his peers also took to social media to share their sadness at the news of his death, with Radio 1 DJ Trevor Nelson describing it as "another great loss to British black music".

He said: "Just heard the sad news of another great loss to British black music.

"Condolences to the Family of Steve Sutherland who I first met and worked with at the Kensington roof gardens 30 years ago."

The circumstances surrounding the DJ's death are currently not known.
