The gaming world is mourning the loss of Tomonobu Itagaki, one of Japan’s most iconic and influential developers, who died on Oct. 16, 2025, at the age of 58.
Known for shaping the modern action and fighting genres, Itagaki’s creative vision and bold personality left an enduring mark on the industry through legendary franchises such as Dead or Alive and Ninja Gaiden. His passing was announced through a heartfelt post shared on his official Facebook page, a message he had written in advance and entrusted to a close friend to release when the time came.
Titled “Last Words,” the message carried the tone of a man who had lived life on his own terms. “The light of my life is finally fading. The fact that this message has been posted means that the time has finally come. I am no longer with this world,” the statement read.
“My life has been a series of battles. I kept winning. I’ve caused a lot of trouble, too. I’m proud to say that I followed my beliefs and fought to the end. I have no regrets. However, I’m filled with regret that I wasn’t able to deliver a new work to all my fans. I’m sorry.”
Itagaki began his journey in 1992 when he joined Tecmo. Three years later, he founded Team Ninja, a development studio that would go on to redefine 3D fighting games. The first Dead or Alive game, released in 1996, stood out for its dynamic counter system and fluid combat mechanics. It quickly became a commercial success, establishing itself as a major player in the genre.
Over the years, the franchise sold more than 10 million copies worldwide and became known for both its technical polish and bold design choices. Titles like Dead or Alive 2 and Dead or Alive 3 received widespread critical acclaim and are still celebrated as benchmarks in fighting game history.

Following his departure from Tecmo in 2008, Itagaki founded Valhalla Game Studios with several former Team Ninja members. The studio released Devil’s Third for Wii U, which received mixed reviews but reinforced his commitment to innovation and experimentation. He later formed Itagaki Games in 2021, though no titles had been released before his death.
Tributes have poured in from across the gaming world. Masahiro Sakurai, creator of Super Smash Bros., shared his condolences, while Tekken producer Katsuhiro Harada, once a friendly rival, honored his legacy with a personal message. Team Ninja, the studio he founded, paid tribute by stating it would continue to uphold his creative philosophy.
Recognized by IGN in 2009 as one of the top 100 game creators of all time, Itagaki’s influence on modern gaming is undeniable. Beyond his work, he was known for his trademark sunglasses, candid interviews, and a larger-than-life presence that made him one of gaming’s few true rockstar developers.
His career was defined by passion, confidence, and a relentless drive to challenge conventions, traits that ensured Tomonobu Itagaki’s name will remain synonymous with creativity and innovation in the world of video games.
