Legendary Cream drummer Ginger Baker, 80, 'critically ill' in hospital

Legendary Cream drummer Ginger Baker is "critically ill" in hospital, his family has announced in a short statement on his Twitter page.

The reason why the 80-year-old, whose real is Peter Edward Baker, was hospitalised is currently not known.

It has been reported that he underwent open heart surgery three years ago.

In a statement released on Ginger's Twitter page, his family announced: "The Baker family are sad to announce that Ginger is critically ill in hospital. Please keep him in your prayers tonight."

Baker was the founding member of sixties rock and blues band Cream, recruiting Eric Clapton and Jack Bruce in 1966.

The band is thought to be the first ever supergroup and despite only having a three year career, they sold more than 15 million records.

Ginger is hailed as one of the best drummers ever produced in the UK and he was famed for his fiery temper and no-nonsense approach to life.

Baker had a long battle with drug addiction, with a heroin habit spanning more then 20 years before he was able to clean up in 1981.

He also smoked more than 50 cigarettes a day and in 2013, this habit caught up with him as he was diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
