Mindy Kaling has opened up for the first time about working on the script for Legally Blonde 3.

The Office star Kaling is co-writing the screenplay for the third instalment in the comedy franchise, which stars Reese Witherspoon as sorority-girl-turned-law-student Elle Woods, along with Brooklyn Nine-Nine creator Dan Goor.

Speaking to Access about the project, Kaling said that being asked by Witherspoon to work on the script had been a dream come true.

“I love the franchise so much, I love Elle Woods as a character,” Kaling said. “When Reese asked me if I wanted to write it, I was like, ‘Absolutely!’”

She continued: “I can’t wait to see what Elle Woods [does]... we wrote Elle Woods at 40, and so how Elle Woods is at 40 versus when she was 21 has been really fun to imagine.”

Asked whether the script would be leaning into the “bend and snap”, a move made famous by the first film, Kaling laughed.

“Bend and snap is forever… we definitely have a lot of fan favourites from the original movie and stuff will still be there.”

Legally Blonde was first released in 2001 and starred Witherspoon as Woods, who gets into Harvard Law School in an attempt win back her ex-boyfriend.

It starred Luke Wilson, Selma Blair, Matthew Davis, Victor Garber and Jennifer Coolidge, with a sequel being released in 2003.

The original movie was also adapted into a stage musical, which debuted on Broadway in 2007 and the West End in 2010, where it won the Olivier Award for Best New Musical.

Legally Blonde 3 is currently scheduled for release in May 2022.
