Legal community mourns sudden death of Victorian magistrate

The unexpected death of Victorian magistrate Stephen Myall is expected to cause a number of delays to proceedings in the state's courts as the legal community mourns his death.

In a statement, Victoria's chief magistrate Peter Lauritsen paid tribute to Mr Myall, describing him as loved and respected.

"Mr Myall was a much loved and respected member of the judiciary who worked at a number of court locations including Sunshine, Broadmeadows and across the Geelong region," Mr Lauritsen said.

He said Mr Myall joined the Magistrates' Court in December 2005 after a distinguished legal career.

"Our thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues at this sad time."

He said several matters before the courts were temporarily stood down this afternoon to allow magistrates to mourn their colleague.

This included Cardinal George Pell's committal hearing which has been adjourned until Monday.

Mr Myall was a close colleague of Magistrate Belinda Wallington who is hearing Cardinal Pell's committal.

Friday is a scheduled non-sitting day with minimal court hearings across the state.

Mr Lauritsen said he would be making a further statement at a later date.
