How did this mix come about?
I’ve always been a supporter of the label as they usually have great releases; Tru Thoughts is a certified quality music label, and my radio show on the Belgian nationwide radio station Studio Brussel is a perfect outlet for that kind of music. So we’ve been in touch, as I always try to push upcoming releases on radio, and I have done several mixes and album teasers for labels in the past.
How did you choose the tracks from the back catalogue for this mix?Knowing most of the artists’ music on the catalogue, I already had my Tru Thoughts classics in mind and I knew exactly what to put in the mix, that was very easy – the hardest part is how to blend them and make it coherent.
What was your intention with this mix – were you trying to showcase a particular side of the label that you enjoy or was it the diversity of the catalogue?
Well, I tried to show all the different musical horizons the label has to offer as well as where they’ve come from and how early they were to support some of today’s great artists – think Bonobo.
What does it mean to you to see Tru Thoughts celebrate its 15th anniversary as an independent label?
Having worked for an independent label in the past I know how hard it is; for most indie labels out there it’s about survival – every artist you sign, each bit of money you put into the project may be your last, it’s usually a break even thing or sometimes a loss and not always a success story. The music industry is lucky to have independent labels, with real music lovers at the core; I am not sure what the state of music would be without it … So, going strong for 15 years in that world is already a success, let’s celebrate Tru Thoughts!
The compilation Tru Thoughts Fifteenth Anniversary is released on 20 October. The limited edition deluxe box set is available to pre-order from PledgeMusic now.
