Left wing Glasgow Labour councillor suspended after budget vote row

A left wing councillor has been suspended from the Labour group in Glasgow after failing to vote with his party on the city budget.

Matt Kerr has been sanctioned despite claiming technological issues were the reason for not supporting a Labour amendment.

Kerr, a councillor in Cardonald, stood for the deputy leadership of Scottish Labour in 2020 but lost to MSP Jackie Baillie.

An investigation by Glasgow Labour councillors took place last month after he did not vote with his party on the budget.

The Record has been told his councillor colleagues today voted to suspend him until the end of the month.

The short term nature of the suspension means he will be eligible to stand in the council election in May.

Glasgow council is led by the SNP.

Two years ago Kerr ran into trouble after he said he could not vote for any of the budget proposals in Glasgow.

He tweeted at the time: "I announced that I could not vote for any cuts budget being proposed for the city that I represent. I have had enough, this city has had enough and we owe it to the people we represent to put up a fight."

Scottish Labour and Kerr have been contacted.
