LeedsLive readers react to whether pubs and restaurants opened too soon

Last month, the hospitality sector in Leeds and across the UK began to open up again after the government announced changes to coronavirus lockdown restrictions.

At the time, new cases of the virus and deaths were continuing to plummet, but Leicester remained in lockdown because there was a growing number of cases in the city.

And only last week Calderdale, Bradford and Kirklees were put back into lockdown due to the rise of new coronavirus cases - which begs the question, were restaurants and pubs opened too early after lockdown?

We asked LeedsLive readers whether the July 4 reopening date for pubs and restaurants was correct - and these were the responses.

Caron Munro said: “We can’t stay locked away forever.”

Paula Schofield said: “No not at all when would be the right time? I went for the first time the other week and felt more safer there than shopping for groceries!”

George Stanton said: “Yes most definitely, I said it when it was happening looks like I might be proven right.”

Terry Smith said: “Yes. Drinkers will disagree. Once you get a couple down your neck, and your inhibitions drop, you let your guard down. Then there are the idiots who just want a scrap if anyone looks at them the wrong way.”

Dawn Linley said: “No. I've been to the pub a couple of times and everything in place as it should be. We can’t stay locked up indefinitely but take responsibility for your own protection.”

Robert Tidswell said: “No. Should never have been shut in the first place.”

Steven Heeson said: “It's easy to look back knowing. I think restaurants were well prepared, as were most pubs. The problem is and always will be, humans. Certain types of people will simply ignore distancing etc. Especially are a few beers.”

Jo Hart said: “Not too soon but more places need to implement track and trace. I've been a few places and no sign of it or when in use customers not using anyway. I'd wanna know if someone had been carrying whilst I was visiting where possible.”

Jennifer Hallos said: “No, it's the public some of them just don't seem to think it matters, they will be first to moan if pubs have to close again."

Steven Freeman said: “Yes. It's not over yet."
