'Leeds will go up this year' - Wigan Athletic's Paul Cook on Leeds United and Marcelo Bielsa

Wigan Athletic boss Paul Cook has said some very complimentary things about Marcelo Bielsa and Leeds United ahead of Saturday’s match at DW Stadium.

Latics famously put a major dent in United's hopes for automatic promotion last season, when they fought back from one goal down with 10 men to win 2-1 at Elland Road.

He was keen to play down that famous win, though, even though it all but secured the club’s Championship status last season.

“That Leeds fixture at Elland Road played a massive part in us staying in this division, which was a fantastic achievement,” he said, per Wigan Today

“But it’s gone now as far as I’m concerned.”

The Whites were one of only four Championship sides to win at the DW Stadium last season, and Wigan have continued their strong home form this season with an opening weekend 3-2 win over Cardiff City.

Having seen United up close twice last season, Cook has raved about the football they play under the legendary Argentinian coach.

"Leeds are a very good team, with a very good coach,” he said. "The set-up is great, and everything is set up for it to be a Premier League club again.

“Everyone in the game will have an opinion about Leeds United, but the best opinions are for the people inside the club to have and not for everyone else.

“Personally, I feel Leeds will go up this year. The experience they gained last season will stand them in really good success, but as far as we’re concerned, it’s all about us - and whether we can get anything out of the game.”
