Leeds White Rose Shopping Centre 'unsafe' as big crowds rush to Christmas sales amid Tier 5 talks

Hundreds of people rushed to the Boxing Day sales at the White Rose Shopping Centre in Leeds amid Tier 5 coronavirus lockdown talks.

It comes after millions in the country were moved into Tier 4 restrictions with the government now considering even stricter measures to curb the spread of Covid-19.

Despite rising case numbers and infection rates, people in Leeds eagerly flocked to the south Leeds shopping centre on Bank Holiday Monday.

Visitors said they were shocked by how many people were inside the centre and that many did not follow government guidance.

One man, who submitted the above picture to LeedsLive, said: "I didn't stay long as it was so busy - the picture says it all.

"There were simply too many people in there, I didn’t feel safe and left."

Another person complained on Twitter and said: "@whiteroseleeds Distinct lack of Covid safety measures. Very disappointing. Had to leave - heard your advertisement for safe shopping on way home.

"Did not feel safe. Large groups of youths without face masks - unchallenged. Not safe at all."

In response to the complaint, the centre wrote: "We're disappointed to hear this. We've been working hard to make the centre as safe as possible and will pass your comments on to centre management.

"We are asking people to follow government guidance in regards to face coverings and social distancing."

Earlier today, the centre warned shoppers that it was close to capacity in a post on social media.
