Leeds welcomes the Queen's Baton Relay with Olympic legends the Brownlee brothers

A celebration event was held today (July 12) in Leeds to welcome the Queen's Baton Relay visit to the city. Leeds Olympic gold medalists Alistair and Jonny Brownlee took to the stage to carry the baton onto the podium.

The baton arrived in the city in the late afternoon, it passed through Leeds Dock before heading along the famous streets to its final destination at Millenium Square. A special celebration event was held, featuring a live band and singing from Class Dynamix.

After travelling around the Commonwealth, the Baton is now on its final journey around the country leading up to the opening ceremony of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games at the end of this month (July 28).

The Lord Mayor of Leeds welcomed the sportsmen to the stage, along with the baton that has been carried by thousands of people throughout its journey. Crowds whooped and cheered for the arrival in the sun before having a little boogie later on.

The baton contains a message to the Commonwealth from Her Majesty The Queen. BBC Radio Leeds presenter Richard Stead presented the event, welcoming Class Dynamix, a Leeds choir that reached the semi-finals of Britain's Got Talent.

Hundreds of people attended the event, as well as the Leeds baton bearers, who helped get the baton to where it needed to be.

Among those was 16-year-old Sneha Daga from Leeds, who said:

“I was nominated due to my charity work and contribution to the community. This includes donating 20 inches of my hair, and climbing Mount Snowdon four times to promote organ donation."

The Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, which will be held from 28 July until 8 August 2022, will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to put the city, the region, and its people on the global stage.
