Leeds weather warning upgraded to amber alert for strong winds and danger to life

The Met Office has upgraded a severe weather warning to an amber alert with on Sunday.

An amber weather warning for very strong winds across Yorkshire and the Humber between 8am and 9pm on Sunday, February 9 has been issued as Storm Ciara approaches the region.

The forecaster warns that flying debris could lead to injuries or 'danger to life', as well as damage to buildings including tiles blown from roofs, transport disruption including cancelled or delayed train services or road and bridge closures, and power cuts.

In Leeds, there is also a yellow weather warning for heavy rain between midnight on Saturday and 6pm on Sunday, which could lead to flooding in some areas.

The Met Office says widespread strong winds with gusts of 60-70mph will affect most of England and Wales tomorrow.

The forecast for Leeds says: "Heavy rain and gales, locally severe although mainly over high ground, for the morning.

"Then colder, but still windy, conditions with frequent showers quickly follow. Mild initially. Maximum temperature 14 °C."
