Leeds weather warning for rain with risk of floods and travel problems

Leeds has been issued a yellow weather warning for rain by the Met Office.

The forecaster is warning that persistent rain could lead to flooding and travel disruption across West Yorkshire and North Yorkshire on Friday and early Saturday morning.

The weather warning is in place from 12pm on Friday February 21 to 6am on Saturday February 22.

The Met Office warns that persistent rain, heavy over the hills, 'may lead to flooding and travel disruption during Friday and Friday night'.

Around 20-30mm of rain is likely to fall over higher ground, with the potential for 60-80mm in some areas.

The weather warning comes after Leeds was hit by Storm Ciara and Storm Dennis in two consecutive weekends.

The city suffered flooding, with Kirkstall battered by Storm Ciara and the River Aire rising to dangerously high levels.

At the weekend, the army were drafted in to install emergency flood defences in parts of Ikley.

A Leeds MP has demanded that cash for Leeds' flood defences be part of the government's March Budget.

Rachel Reeves, MP for Leeds West, is calling for the Government to plug the £23m gap between the cost of delivering Phase Two of the Leeds Flood Alleviation Scheme and the funding that has already been secured.

She said parts of her Leeds West constituency, which includes Kirkstall, had a 'close escape' from similar devastation seen during the Boxing Day floods in 2015.
