Leeds Water Taxi staff help save fisherman who had fallen into River Aire

Staff running the Leeds Water Taxi service sprang to action after spotting a man in the River Aire this morning.

Firefighters have praised staff for their help in rescuing a fisherman from the river after he fell into the water near Leeds Bridge.

Leeds Fire Station Watch Commander Richard Potter said the man had been in the water for five to 10 minutes when staff on board the taxi boat spotted him and raised the alarm.

They were able to hold onto him and keep him above the water until emergency services arrived at the scene.

He said: "The water taxi has done some really good work, they were really good.

"Staff on the taxi spotted him, went to assist and held him out of the water."

After receiving a call at 9.43am (Tuesday), crews from Hunslet fire station and two water rescue crews from Leeds station attended and pulled the man from the water near the Riverside Court apartments.

Commander Potter said he was conscious and breathing when he was rescued and was cared for by Yorkshire Ambulance Service paramedics.

He added: "We think he had fallen in near Leeds Bridge.

"The Water Taxi staff have done a really good job in helping."

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: "At 9.39am today (11/6) police received reports of a man in the River Aire near to Dock Street.

"Members of the public had assisted in bringing the man to safety.

"He has been taken to hospital to be checked over but has no life-threatening injuries."

A spokeswoman for Yorkshire Ambulance Service said a rapid response vehicle and ambulance attended the scene after a call at 9.40am.

She said the man was taken to Leeds General Infirmary.
