Leeds venue the Wardrobe celebrates 20 years with performances from funk and soul legends

Leeds venue the Wardrobe is celebrating its 20th birthday with legendary line-up - including DJs Gilles Peterson and Craig Charles.

The staple Leeds nightspot will open a week of events with Leeds soul, funk and jazz legends The New Mastersounds - featuring US singer Lamar Williams Jr.

During six days of top-notch live music - from September 20-28 - 6 Music DJ and former Coronation Street actor Craig Charles returns with his Funk & Soul Club show.

It will feature live band performances from Leeds' Submotion Orchestra - who have played the Wardrobe the multiple times and gone on to play festivals all over the world.

The Wardrobe will be paying homage to the Amy Winehouse show of November 11 2006 during her Back to Black tour with a performance from The Amy Winehouse Experience AKA Lioness.

The week of events is concluded with a set from Jazz and hip-hop DJ, Broadcaster, producer and record label chief Gilles Peterson.

Speaking about the Wardrobe he said: "There were too many great shows at the Wardrobe to remember but Afrobeat co-founder alongside Fela Kuti - drummer Tony Allen in 2011 - has to be my favourite.

"I’m hugely looking forward to the anniversary week to see lots of the old mates from the early days of The Wardrobe like New Mastersounds and in the Casa Latina reunion."

Since first opening its doors the venue has hosted legendary artists such as Amy Winehouse, Charles Bradley and Roy Ayres as well as early shows from breakthrough artists like George Ezra, Catfish & The Bottlemen and Lewis Capaldi.

The Wardrobe has also hosted spoken word, comedy shows and talks - seeing Joe Lycett, Phil Jupitus, James Acaster, Kerry Godliman and Viv Albertine all appear at the venue.

It is also a popular destination for famous comedians and regulars on the TV panel show circuit to test new material prior to residencies at The Edinborough Fringe.

The week will see the return of Casa Latina - an evening of Salsa Classes, live music and salsa DJ’s.

Salsa lovers will witness the reunion of DJ Lubi and Chico after 17 years and the UK’s only all-female salsa band Guerrera.

Star teachers Tanya Cusan Espinosa and Mauricio Reyes will also be in attendance.

The week's lineup is as follows:

  • September 20 - The New Mastersounds Ft Lamar Williams Jnr & The Dig Family

  • September 21 - The Craig Charles Funk & Soul Club

  • September 25 - Submotion Orchestra

  • September 26 - The Amy Winehouse Experience AKA Lionness

  • September 27 - Casa Latina Reunion Party
