Nottingham Forest hit 'roadblock' in Newcastle negotiations as Leeds United take driving seat

Nottingham Forest could be set to bow out of the race to sign Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle.

Sabri Lamouchi 's side have been heavily linked with a loan move for the former Crystal Palace and West Brom ace this month with Forest's French boss keen to bolster his attacking options at the City Ground .

The Reds are looking to strengthen this month ahead of a final push towards promotion to the Premier League, and it is thought that Gayle, who hit 24 Championship goals last term, could provide the fire power to make that dream a reality.

So far this season, Gayle is yet to hit the back of the net in the top-flight during the limited game time that Newcastle boss Steve Bruce has allowed him.

And with a move away from Tyneside looking all the more likely, Forest were creeping closer to landing his signature in a loan deal.

But it has now been reported, by Daily Star, that City Ground chiefs have hit a road block in negotiations with their St. James' Park counterparts - forcing Forest to consider bowing out of a deal.

It is understood that the Magpies demanded the Reds pay the entirety of Gayle's reported £65,000-a-week wage packet for the remainder or the season should they want to secure his services.

That leaves promotion rivals Leeds United firmly in the hot seat, but they too are cautious about the financial repercussions of a deal.

Marcelo Bielsa's side are currently second in the Championship, eight points clear of Forest in the race for Premier League footballl.

Nottingham Forest and Sabri Lamouchi are now said to be plotting their next move.
