Leeds United youngster awarded debut England goal as Three Lions suffer surprise defeat

Leeds United's Charlie Cresswell, Cody Drameh and Sam Greenwood all achieved personal milestones in Georgia on Tuesday afternoon whilst representing England U21.

The trio featured in a surprise 3-2 friendly defeat against the Georgian U21 outfit with Cresswell and Drameh both making their full debuts for the U21 age group, before Sam Greenwood was introduced as a first-half substitute.

Greenwood replaced former Arsenal teammate Folarin Balogun who was taken off with a stomach cramps as England found themselves 1-0 down courtesy of a rasping Giorgio Guliashvili effort heading into the break.

Shortly after the restart, England conceded a second; Guliashvili the scorer once again.

Cresswell picked up a booking on 53 minutes before Georgia netted a third just after the hour mark.

England rallied with some second half substitutions, including the introduction of U21 captain and Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi, as well as Norwich City's Max Aarons who replaced Cody Drameh at right-back after 77 minutes.

Tommy Doyle's 81st minute corner was headed in by Clinton Mola, taking a deflection off Sam Greenwood's back in the process.

England's official Twitter account awarded the goal to Greenwood, although had this taken place in a Premier League fixture, the infamous dubious goals panel may have ruled differently.

Nevertheless, Greenwood's record will show one cap and one goal at U21 level.

Deep into stoppage time, another Doyle corner was headed towards goal by Marc Guehi, who saw his effort find the back of the net.

Ultimately, it was not enough to save England's blushes and the young Lions fell to a 3-2 friendly defeat in Batumi.

From Leeds United's perspective though, there will be positives as all three of Cresswell, Drameh and Greenwood appeared to come through the fixture unscathed.

They will now return to Thorp Arch in the coming days having featured in England U21s' final fixture of this calendar year.
