Leeds United XIs as Marcelo Bielsa faces Jamie Shackleton and Rodrigo dilemmas against West Ham

Marcelo Bielsa is facing a real quandary with his Leeds United selections this weekend as they face West Ham.

The Whites are without Robin Koch and Diego Llorente due to injury whilst Pascal Struijk will serve the final match of his three-game ban.

Charlie Cresswell could deputise alongside Liam Cooper in the heart of the defence, with Luke Ayling, Raphinha and Jack Harrison possibly joining Patrick Bamford on the sidelines.

That has created great intrigue at what XI Bielsa could opt for, with lots of different solutions available to the Whites boss.

Here, LeedsLive dissects each possible combination available to United.

Cresswell in for his debut

After an impressive performance against Fulham in the Carabao Cup, Cresswell could start alongside Cooper in defence.

Stuart Dallas could remain at right-back after reverting to that role against Newcastle United with Ayling shuffling across.

That would allow Kalvin Phillips to remain in midfield alongside Mateusz Klich and Rodrigo Moreno, with Tyler Roberts leading the line.

"I wouldn’t have any inconveniences," Bielsa said when asked about handing Cresswell a Premier League debut.

"The performance from the other day is not a definitive performance, but it has a lot of arguments to say he took advantage of the opportunity he was given and he deserved it.

"If you observe, in the game against Newcastle, after taking [Luke] Ayling off, I pushed [Jamie] Shackleton in as a defensive midfielder and I put [Kalvin] Phillips in the backline in place of Cresswell coming on directly for Ayling, which would have been more natural.

"That indicates a position of mine with respect to Cresswell. After the game against Fulham, he’s taken a significant step forward. I have to read that message."

Potential XI: Meslier; Dallas, Cresswell, Cooper, Firpo; Phillips; Raphinha, Klich, Rodrigo, James; Roberts.

Shackleton recalled

Jamie Shackleton could find his way in the XI with a few different combinations.

If Bielsa opts to play Phillips at centre-back, Shackleton could move into midfield or even play at right-back, with Dallas moved back into the centre.

The midfielder impressed at full-back in pre-season but Bielsa also admitted his best position is as a holding midfielder, though he's yet to start a Premier League match in that position.

"Shackleton is a player whatever he proposes to himself he’s able to achieve it," Bielsa said.

"As long as what he’s looking for has links to his characteristics. The resources he has allow him to play as a full-back and as a defensive midfielder.

"His original position of a mixed midfielder, which is his true position, allows him to be able to defend out wide and to be able to play in the middle. In both positions, he knows how to defend and how to manage the ball."

Potential XI: Meslier; Dallas/Shackleton, Phillips, Cooper, Firpo; Shackleton/Dallas; Raphinha, Klich, Rodrigo, James; Roberts.

Rodrigo down the middle

Leeds fans have been agonising about the form of Rodrigo this season, with few convinced about his role in central midfield.

The Spanish striker has been forced to play a more withdrawn role due to Bamford's form but with the Englishman out, he could be given his chance down the middle.

Rodrigo impressed with a brace from the bench against Burnley in his last significant outing as a number nine and a rejig in midfield could offer him the opportunity to play in his 'favoured' role.

Potential XI: Meslier; Dallas/Shackleton, Cresswell, Cooper, Firpo; Phillips; Raphinha, Klich, Shackleton/Dallas, James; Rodrigo.
