Leeds United would be promoted under governing body's new precedent

Leeds United will be promoted to the Premier League immediately if EFL chooses to follow the precedent set by Rugby Football Union today.

RFU, the governing body for rugby union in England, has confirmed the end of the 2019/20 season for all leagues in its pyramid below the top flight.

Promotion and relegation will still take place across the divisions using what it calls a “best playing record formula.”

An explanation of that formula is not included in the statement, but The Independent reports RFU will apply each club’s average points total home and away to their remaining fixtures and decide the final league table that way.

Naturally, barring a major disparity in the number of home or away games each club has, this is unlikely to alter the current standings.

Newcastle Falcons, top of the second tier, have already had their promotion confirmed to the Premiership.

If the same ruling and formula were to be applied to the EFL Championship, the Whites would end with 89 points (88.5) and West Bromwich Albion 87 points (86.8).

Fulham would stay third with a projected total of 79 points (79.2).

Football’s authorities have continued to stress they are committed to playing out 2019/20 on the pitch, but have yet to lay out any dates or plan for how this would happen.
