Leeds United win appeal over Gaetano Berardi's red card at Millwall as suspension is rescinded

Leeds United have won their appeal over Gaetano Berardi's red card.

The Swiss was sent off in the 14th minute of the Whites' visit to Millwall on Saturday with the scores at 0-0 by referee James Linington, who adjudged Berardi to have brought down Tom Bradshaw in the Leeds penalty area.

Replays suggested that there was minimal or no contact with Bradshaw, with Millwall's Jed Wallace dispatching the subsequent penalty as the Lions claimed a 2-1 win.

Leeds quickly announced their attention to appeal the card on Sunday morning, ahead of a 1pm Monday deadline. The club had until 1pm on Tuesday to provide any supporting evidence and the case has quickly been heard by the FA.

A short statement on the Leeds United website reads:

'An independent Regulatory Commission has removed Gaetano Berardi's one-match suspension with immediate effect following a claim of wrongful dismissal.

'The Whites defender was sent off for denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity against Millwall in the EFL Championship on 5 October 2019.'

That means Berardi will be available to face Birmingham City a week on Saturday for the club's centenary fixture.

Berardi had replaced injured skipper Liam Cooper in Marcelo Bielsa's starting XI on Saturday, after the Scotland international was ruled out for six weeks.
