Leeds United will have Marcelo Bielsa's focus as he celebrates his birthday amid contract wait

With the passage of time, Leeds United creep closer to the biggest announcement of the summer: Marcelo Bielsa’s new contract.

The Whites head coach celebrates his 66th birthday today, but no doubt a large portion of his mind will still be fixed on the season ahead.

As with the close season last year, the wait for official confirmation of Bielsa’s new deal has dragged on longer than many fans would like, but again, like last year, there is no concern about the Argentine’s future.

Angus Kinnear effectively confirmed the new contract himself when he spoke to BBC Radio Leeds earlier this summer.

The chief executive pointed to the fact Bielsa chose not to return to South America after the conclusion of last season.

Bielsa instead opted to stick around Wetherby and Thorp Arch, overseeing the work being done on the pitches there.

The Elland Road boss is as good as his word and the paperwork with signatures comes later. It’s down the list of his priorities for continuing to push this club forward.

There has also been the small matter of drawing up the relative paperwork for his backroom team, many of whom have their deals tied in with Bielsa’s.

There are small steps taken at a time, but whether it’s the day before the opening match of the season or sooner, it will happen and Bielsa’s future will be confirmed.
