Leeds United under-23 player ratings: Struijk leads from the front but there's too many sixes

Leeds United (4-1-4-1)

1 Illan Meslier - six

Plenty of intrigue as we got our first look at the towering Frenchman. Plenty of height, but little bulk. Came for as many high balls as he could and claimed the majority, but did look shaky at times. Keen to play out with his feet, but invited pressure, much like Kiko Casilla. Saved a penalty, but could do nothing about the rebound. Kamil Miazek would still be my pick on the first-team bench.

2 Robbie Gotts - six

Work rate and endeavour, but a few uncharacteristic mistakes from the versatile battler. Did not quite have the composure or cutting edge needed to make a difference in the final third on the overlap.

6 Bryce Hosannah - five

Went to ground far too suddenly and gave away a second-half penalty which offered Millwall the glimmer of light they had not seen before then. Also made some good challenges, which deserve credit, but the fatal error counts against him.

5 Pascal Struijk © - eight

Pascal Struijk in action. Pre-Season Friendly - York City v Leeds United - Wednesday 10th July 2019 - Bootham Crescent (Alex Dodd/CameraSport)

The only recognised centre-back in the team and stood tall as he needed to, to lead from the back. Battled with experienced target man Tom Elliott throughout the first half. Headed anything which needed heading in the second period. Committed in the tackle and handy with the ball at his feet too.

3 Ezgjan Alioski - six

A few decent forays into the final third down the left flank, but not a huge effect on the match. Had nowhere near the say on a game someone of his standing should have.

4 Alfie McCalmont - seven

Looked every inch the Kalvin Phillips back-up. Dictated play from central positions and always offered team-mates an option. Knows how to take care of the ball.

7 Helder Costa - six

Helder Costa vies for possession with Ibou Touray. Carabao Cup First Round - Salford City v Leeds United - Tuesday 13th August 2019 - Moor Lane (Alex Dodd/CameraSport)

One or two flashes of real quality. Rolled his studs over the ball to wrong foot one opponent and another effective dribble from the halfway line well into enemy territory. However, nothing like the impact you want from a £15m attacker playing at this level.

8 Jamie Shackleton - six

Steady. Got forward. Put tackles in. Had one decent effort tipped over the bar.

10 Kun Temenuzhkov - five

Lost the ball too often or wasted it with passes in important positions on the pitch. Seems to have regressed since his pomp in the middle of 2018/19.

11 Jack Clarke - six

Dribbled from wide positions towards goal in a manner he is making look predictable at times. Cut off too often and running into blind alleys. Did show lovely vision and weight of pass ahead of Eddie Nketiah’s goal.

9 Jordan Stevens - six

Certainly not a candidate for centre forward in competitive matches on this evidence. Positioning seemed to be off as he tried to find space as the main striker in behind. Fared better in the second half in his more traditional wide role.

Substitutes

12 Kamil Miazek

13 Olly Casey

14 Mateusz Bogusz (on for Shackleton h/t) - six

Scoring with the last kick of the match saved his mark here. One of the poorest displays we’ve seen from the Pole. Very wasteful with the ball. Jogged around and didn’t show any turn of pace or desire to attack the game.

15 Eddie Nketiah (on for Costa h/t) - six

Quiet apart from the brilliantly taken goal. Looked isolated when Millwall put the hosts under prolonged pressure in their half.

Eddie Nketiah steps off the coach. Carabao Cup First Round - Salford City v Leeds United - Tuesday 13th August 2019 - Moor Lane (Alex Dodd/CameraSport)

16 Gaetano Berardi (on for Alioski h/t) - six

Steady at left-back.
