Leeds United U23s team news as Marcelo Bielsa resists Patrick Bamford temptation

Leeds United's U23 side are without a win since September but have come agonisingly close to securing a victory of late.

Defeats to Salford City and Manchester United U23 saw the young Whites put up a valiant fight, but ultimately end up on the losing side.

However, this evening's contest gives them the opportunity to put right the wrongs of recent weeks.

Interestingly enough, the starting XI for tonight's Premier League Cup fixture against Mansfield Town U23 is decidedly different from the line-ups we've become accustomed to this season.

Many first-choice U23 players are away on international duty with their countries, including Crysencio Summerville, Charlie Cresswell and Sam Greenwood, therefore development squad boss Mark Jackson has been forced to rely on some of the club's younger faces.

As a result, the squad is looking fairly youthful at the LNER Community Stadium in York this evening.

The Whites will be looking to record a first victory in this competition, after consecutive 2-1 defeats to Wigan Athletic and Sunderland earlier this season.

There was the possible temptation to bring Patrick Bamford, Luke Ayling, Junior Firpo and Joe Gelhardt back into the fold this evening, but they have all been left out in order to recuperate from their respective injuries.

Firpo appeared in a recent PL2 fixture against Arsenal but only featured for 30 minutes.

It was not uncommon for Bielsa to allow first-team players looking to gain match fitness the opportunity of an U23 run-out last season, hence the Bamford suggestion, but that avenue has rarely been explored during 2021/22.

Here is the XI Mark Jackson has named for this PL Cup Group E tie with Mansfield: Christy (GK), Moore, Kenneh, Debayo, McCarron; Jenkins, Allen, Gray; Hughes, McGurk, Dean

Substitutes: Ombang (GK), Carole, Littlewood, Picksley, Buchan
