Leeds United U23s on brink of Premier League 2 Division Two title after Stoke City drop points

The Champagne is on ice for Leeds United's under-23s side after their nearest rivals Stoke City dropped points in the race for the Premier League 2 Division Two title.

Mark Jackson's side now just need one point from their final three matches to beat the Potters to the trophy and promotion to the Premier League 2 top tier.

That means a draw at Aston Villa on Friday night will ensure that the league is sewn up, rewarding a superb campaign in Leeds' first season at this level.

Stoke were only able to draw 2-2 with Crystal Palace on Monday afternoon, with Eagles strike Jean-Philippe Mateta netted a braces before Ethon Varian pulled one back for the Potters.

D'Margio Wright-Phillips - son of former Manchester City and England winger Shaun - then scored an equaliser which keeps the Potters' slim mathematical hopes of catching Leeds alive - although they are hanging by a thread and would need a 20-goal swing if Leeds were to lose all three of their remaining matches.

The prize for Leeds would be a place in next season's Premier League 2 Division One, where Jackson's side will be able to put themselves against the likes of Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool.

Leeds are in action again on Friday night when they make the trip to Aston Villa for a 7pm kick-off and will look to finish a remarkable campaign in style.

The young Whites have won 16 of their 21 matches so far, scoring 54 goals in the process with Joe Gelhardt leading the way with 11 goals in his 15 appearances, while fellow summer signing Sam Greenwood has netted eight times.

Greenwood made a first-team debut in Leeds' FA Cup defeat at Crawley Town, with fellow under-23s standout Niall Huggins coming off the bench in February's 4-2 first-team defeat at Arsenal. The likes of Gelhardt, Jack Jenkins, Charlie Cresswell, Oliver Casey and Elia Caprile have all made the first team bench this season.

Leeds strolled to a 5-0 win at West Bromwich Albion last time out, with Gelhardt scoring a hat-trick.

Following Friday's trip to Aston Villa, Leeds round their season off with a trip to Fulham and a home clash against Burnley.

This is the first time that the club have taken part in the Premier League 2, following the club's Thorp Arch academy being granted Category One status last summer.
