Leeds United U23s name ex-Wigan youngster to face Latics in crucial PL Cup fixture

Leeds United U23s take on Wigan Athletic's youngsters at the Lancashire FA County Ground in Leyland this evening.

The two sides met earlier this season, playing out a 2-1 win for the visitors when Wigan were hosted by Leeds at York's LNER Community Stadium.

The Latics currently top their Premier League Cup group, with Leeds trailing two places behind in third.

Only first and second place sides qualify for the knockout rounds of this Champions League-format competition, meaning Leeds need to win one of their two remaining fixtures against Wigan this evening or Mansfield Town to stand a chance of progressing.

This fixture was postponed back in December due to a frozen pitch, but an inspection has been passed and the sides given the green light to take to the turf from 7pm.

Leeds' last outing in this competition was a 3-3 draw against Sunderland U23s.

The Whites went 3-0 up at half-time, but surrendered their advantage in a disappointing second half.

Mark Jackson's youngsters have dealt with several U23 players being promoted to the first-team squad throughout this season, which has meant the U23 head coach's starting XIs have featured several U18 players for fixtures such as these.

This evening, Jackson has been able to name a handful of U23s but it is a squad which resembles the side Leeds put out earlier this year against Sunderland.

One player who will not be appearing for the 23s tonight is new Cardiff City loanee Cody Drameh. The 20-year-old has joined the south Wales club on a loan deal until the end of the season.

Marcelo Bielsa discussed at length the decision to permit Drameh's exit, which was against his personal desire to keep the England U21 full-back at the club.

Wigan Athletic U23s have named James Carragher, son of former Liverpool defender Jamie in their starting XI.

Leeds United U23s XI: Van den Heuvel, Sutcliffe, Ferguson, Kenneh (C), Mullen, Littlewood, Miller, Allen, Dean, Gray, McGurk

Subs: Christy (GK), Coleman, Spencer, Carole, Thomas
