Leeds United U23s coach lands European job as he moves into first-team management

Leeds United Under-23s coach Jaime Monroy has left his role at the club to take up the position of first-team manager at Greek side Xanthi FC.

Monroy was at the club for two years but has decided to leave for pastures new in order to become a manager of a professional outfit for the first time in his coaching career.

The 38-year-old has worked alongside both Carlos Corberan and Mark Jackson during his time at Leeds and helped the club transition into their Category One status that was achieved last year for the first time in history.

He helped guide the Under-23s’ promotion to the Premier League Two Division One last term, as Leeds romped to the title in their debut season at the highest level of academy football.

Monroy also oversaw the development of several youngsters into the club’s first team during his two years at the club, including Pascal Struijk, who enjoyed an excellent season last term as a regular starter for Marcelo Bielsa’s side.

The Portuguese possesses a relatively extensive CV when it comes to coaching, as he has spent time at the likes of AD Alcorcon, FC Baku, Boavista and, perhaps, most impressively, FC Barcelona.

While his appointment at Xanthi FC does represent his first time in professional management, Monroy has already enjoyed a brief spell as a manager in the Australian semi-pro game at Syndey Olympic.

His new side Xanthi currently ply their trade in the Greek Super League Division Two and reportedly possess an excellent youth setup that should benefit Monroy in his new role.
