Leeds United U-21 team news confirmed as Whites name new signings against last year's finalists

Leeds United are on Merseyside this evening with the U-21 side competing in the Papa John's Trophy.

Last year, the Whites' development squad were defeated in the group stage by Accrington Stanley and Blackpool, but held League Two Barrow to a 2-2 draw, before losing out on penalties.

It's League Two opposition again this year, as the Whites visit Tranmere Rovers' Prenton Park to kick-off their EFL Trophy campaign.

Mark Jackson has named a youthful XI to go up against this evening's opponents, leaving out a flurry of key names from his standout U-23 squad.

Sam Greenwood, Joe Gelhardt, Crysencio Summerville, Charlie Cresswell and the like are missing from the travelling squad, but Nohan Kenneh, Sean McGurk, Amari Miller, Max Dean and Charlie Allen all start.

Miller and McGurk both joined the Whites this summer, signing from Birmingham City and Wigan Athletic respectively.

Both have featured prominently for the U-23 side since the beginning of the season, with McGurk netting his first goal for the Whites at Crystal Palace in the U-23's opening game of the campaign.

Tonight, the substitutes' bench is punctuated by a number of U-18s and first-year scholars as Jackson has rung the changes.

Tranmere have acquired a reputation as a dour, defensive side under Micky Mellon this season.

Rovers have seen five goals in seven league matches so far, while no game has amassed more than a solitary goal.

Here is the starting XI Mark Jackson has named:

Leeds United XI: Dani van den Heuvel, Jeremiah Chilokoa-Mullen, Nohan Kenneh, Kris Moore, Harvey Sutcliffe, Charlie Allen, Archie Gray, Joe Snowdon, Sean McGurk, Amari Miller, Max Dean

Substitutes: Harry Christy (GK), Alfie Hughes, Morten Spencer, Keenan Carole, Cian Coleman, Luca Thomas, Ben Andreucci
