Leeds United transfer rumours: Whites close to midfielder deal as Junior Firpo move endorsed

Leeds United continue to be linked to a number of players as the transfer window begins to click into gear this summer.

The Whites are understood to be keen on acquiring players at left-back, in central midfield and a winger ahead of their second season back in the Premier League.

Marcelo Bielsa already believes he has a number of the core ingredients at the club and only the right additions will be made to add to an already impressive squad at his disposal.

Here is a round-up of the latest reports on players being linked with a move to Elland Road.

Leeds close to McGurk deal

Leeds United are reportedly closing in on the signing of Wigan Athletic prodigy Sean McGurk, a player long linked with a possible move to Elland Road.

That is according to The Times’ Northern Football Correspondent Paul Joyce, who claims Leeds are set to make the teenager their second academy signing of the summer following the arrival of Amari Miller from Birmingham City.

He also explained that although a fee of around £175,000 has been discussed between the two clubs for the now out-of-contract star, the transfer fee may yet be settled by a tribunal due to rules relating to transfers involving players under the age of 24 between English clubs.

Firpo endorsement

Spanish football expert Guillem Balague has insisted Leeds United are getting a freat deal with Junior Firpo.

The Barcelona defender is expected to sign at Elland Road to replace Ezgjan Alioski at left-back in the coming days.

“Junior is not the player seen at Barcelona," he wrote on Twitter.

“What Leeds United is getting is a young energetic full-back that needs space in front of him to make an impact. Better running with the ball than attacking a static defence.

“Has lost confidence but has lots of it when playing well.”

Whelan raves over Firpo deal

Former Leeds United player Noel Whelan believes the club are getting a great deal by signing Junior Firpo from

“When you look at him, he’s got all the credentials that Leeds United really need," Whelan told Football Insider.

“I’ve looked everywhere on the YouTube videos. He looks like an athlete in himself. We know he’s coming from a good background at Barcelona.

“They play the right way, the way that Marcelo Bielsa likes. He’s definitely got the attributes and credentials to be at Leeds and fit straight in.

“He can’t be a bad player to have been playing second fiddle to Jordi Alba all this time. He’ll have learned a lot from a very experienced player.

“It’s very exciting we could be nearing getting that natural left-sided full-back we need.

“I think getting somebody with that kind of credential, from that kind of background, would be a massive coup for Leeds.”
