Leeds United transfer rumours: Tomori interest, Rangers star would 'suit' Whites

Leeds United did not take their first season in the Premier League lightly. Marcelo Bielsa was allowed to freely spend in the summer window, breaking the club transfer record in the process.

However, as the January transfer window now comes into view, Leeds could look to spend once more as they hope to further establish themselves in the top-flight of English football.

A defensive injury crisis could see the Whites invest in a centre-back. We have an update on interest in a reported target here.

We also have updates on a right-back who has been named as superior to Luke Ayling and would suit Leeds' style and the struggles of one of the blockbuster summer acquisitions.

Here is a round-up of the latest Leeds transfer rumours.

Bielsa responds to criticism about announcing his team early

Tavernier suited to Leeds' style

Rangers right-back James Tavernier is better than Leeds' Luke Ayling.

That is the opinion of Open Goal host Simon Ferry, who has played against Ayling and believes that Tavernier would be an intriguing acquisition for Bielsa's style of play.

"I played against the Leeds right-back, Luke Ayling," Ferry told Open Goal. "I think he [Tavernier] is better than him. I can’t believe he’s playing in the Premier League, obviously he’s done very well. Bielsa has made him a lot better.

"But in terms of ability, Tavernier is a lot better. Leeds would suit him, aye. That sort of team. Everyone that goes from Scotland to England does well, John McGinn got a five-year deal. He’s [Tavernier] the best crosser by a mile, in the league."

Tavernier has scored an incredible 17 goals this season, alongside 13 assists in a brilliant individual campaign.

Rodrigo 'concern'

A report in Spain claims that Leeds' summer signing Rodrigo Moreno is worried that he will lose his place in the Spain squad for next summer's rearranged European Championship.

Rodrigo arrived from Valencia prior to this season with the expectation that he would take Patrick Bamford's role as Bielsa's leading centre-forward. However, Bamford has held onto his starting position meaning Rodrigo has mostly been used in attacking midfield thus far.

Spanish outlet AS via MOT Leeds News reports that Rodrigo fears this may mean he loses his place in Spain's squad at the end of the season.

His goal against Newcastle on Wednesday evening may well help allay those fears though, as he netted for the second time in 11 league appearances.

Leeds express Tomori interest

Per talkSPORT journalist Alex Crook, Leeds have expressed interest in Chelsea defender Fikayo Tomori, who is expected to leave Stamford Bridge on a six-month loan deal next month.

It had previously been reported that Leeds were monitoring Tomori's situation, but with Tomori having slipped down the pecking order at Chelsea and both Diego Llorente and Robin Koch dealing with separate injury issues, Crook reports that Leeds have now stepped up their interest.

However, French side Rennes are also interested in bringing Tomori in on a temporary deal, and Crook names them as the current favourites.

He said: "It’s almost certain that he’s going to leave Stamford Bridge on loan this January. He’s only featured in one Premier League or Champions League game this season. There was interest from West Ham in the summer when he walked away from a move on deadline day.

"Leeds have expressed an interest but I’m told Rennes is the most likely destination now for Tomori. They tried to sign him as part of Edouard Mendy’s move to Chelsea and talks have continued on behind the scenes."
