Leeds United transfer rumours: Teenage striker eyed, Barry Douglas and Helder Costa claims

Leeds United have taken a big step towards earning promotion to the Premier League.

The Whites edged out Swansea City 1-0 in Wales to move three points clear at the top of the Championship.

Leeds are also six points ahead of third-placed Brentford with three games left, meaning four more points will secure promotion out of the Championship.

But if and when that happens everyone concerned knows that Leeds must add quality to compete in the top tier.

This is the time of the year when the rumour mill starts to go into overdrive and it's no different right now. Here is the latest round-up of gossip on Leeds.

Leeds interested in Wigan forward

Wigan Athletic are in trouble financially after being hit with a 12-point deduction for going into administration.

In a bid to tempt a buyer they are attempting to offload several players, including striker Joe Gelhardt.

The Sun report that the 18-year-old is attracting transfer interest from the likes of Tottenham, Everton, Southampton, Leeds and Celtic. The Athletic's Phil Hay has also stated that Leeds are admirers of the forward.

Bent sends contract message to Leeds

Former Tottenham man Darren Bent has urged Leeds to tie down Barry Douglas.

It has been reported that the Whites want to offer the 30-year-old a new contract.

Bent has told Football Insider that such a decision would be a 'sensible' one.

“It’s sensible, he was very, very good against Blackburn when he came in, he was fantastic," Bent said.

“What you want to do, you want to get these things tied up sooner rather than later. I always feel the teams that are better equipped in the Premier League, when they come up from the Championship, are the ones who get their business done early.

“It gives them a chance to work with what they’ve got and sort their situations out. It’s the ones that come in, get promoted, start scrambling around, sign the wrong characters, the wrong players and ultimately it ends up punishing them.

“If Leeds can sort out these situations now, as you said about Douglas, Jack Harrison, Helder Costa’s signed – if they can sort these out now then all they’ve got to do is find additions that are going to make them better rather than scramble around to replace players they’ve had this season.”

Bruce makes Leeds claim

Alex Bruce insists that Helder Costa's permanent transfer may one day be classed as a 'cheap'.

Costa had been on a season-long loan from Wolves until a permanent deal was struck for £16 million last week.

This news has not been met with glowing praise but Bruce believes one day it might be deemed a steal.

“He might not have hit the heights that they were expecting but if they get promoted, which I’m sure will happen, they’ll be looking for him to add some Premier League experience to the squad and really be a positive next season," Bruce told Football Insider.

“I could name you a few players who have been bought for a lot more money who might make you think £16m is cheap in today’s market.”
