Leeds United transfer rumours: Striker loan rejected, Kalvin Phillips cover, left-back targeted

Leeds United closed out the January transfer window with barely a whisper on Monday.

The Whites were never expected to be busy in the winter window, with Victor Orta publicly admitting as much before it opened, and they now enter the second half of the season without any fresh faces added to the mix.

Given their success in their first Premier League season in almost two decades, it is understandable why Marcelo Bielsa is hesitant to disrupt the rhythm of his squad.

But that does not mean there are no future targets for a team that will now look to embark on a top-half challenge.

Here is a round-up of the Leeds transfer rumours as we wrap up the aftermath of deadline day.

Was Raphinha a bargain according to Bielsa?

Kalvin Phillips cover

Leeds will reportedly look for a defensive midfielder as cover for Kalvin Phillips in the summer transfer window.

Phillips has been a mainstay under Bielsa, showing off his tremendous passing range as an ever-present anchor of the Leeds midfield.

He missed three Premier League matches with a shoulder injury earlier in the season, Leeds losing 4-1 twice to Leicester City and Crystal Palace in that span.

And now The Athletic reports that Leeds will target a new defensive midfielder as cover for Phillips in the summer window.

The report states that Leeds felt they did not need to conduct any business this January and instead have focused their attentions on summer recruitment, which will include a new defensive midfielder.

However, finding one with comparable skills to Phillips is easier said than done, though Leeds reportedly have several long-term targets who they will consider at the end of the season.

Summer left-back targeted

The Athletic also reports that Leeds will target a new left-back in the summer, with Ligue 1's Romain Perraud named as the number one priority at present.

Perraud had been tentatively linked with a move to Elland Road previously, and now The Athletic confirms that the club is indeed interested in the Stade Brest full-back who is renowned for his attacking influence.

Bielsa has rotated between Stuart Dallas and Gjanni Alioski at the position so far this season, though the latter is in the final year of his contract and could depart on a free transfer at the end of the campaign.

Meanwhile, Dallas has played in central midfield and is perhaps better suited to a central position.

As such, a natural left-back seems like a position of need as initial plans for the summer window are drawn up.

Bielsa rejected Greenwood loan offer

Bielsa rejected Swansea City's loan offer for young striker Sam Greenwood on deadline day, per The Athletic.

Leeds signed Greenwood from Arsenal in the summer. He has impressed for the under 23s, scoring six goals in nine Premier League 2 goals so far this season. He also made his first-team debut in the FA Cup third-round defeat to Crawley Town.

Swansea reportedly made a loan offer for Greenwood on deadline day, but Hay tweeted out that Leeds don't want to let him leave.

Per Phil Hay, Bielsa prefers to keep his leading under-23 players in the squad with him as he continues to aid their development and integrate them with the senior set-up.

Greenwood will subsequently remain with Leeds for the remainder of the season.
