Leeds United transfer rumours: Stephan Ambrosius blow, Florentino Luis interest, midfielder plea

As the January transfer window gets closer, Leeds United are consistently being linked with a host of new players.

Marcelo Bielsa will have a very good idea of what areas of his squad need improving in the mid-season window, after the opening eight matches of the campaign.

It could be that a few players come in with a few going out for the Whites in January, with the rumour mill starting to fill up as each day passes.

Here are the latest Leeds transfer rumours from around Europe.

Whites suffer Ambrosius blow

Leeds look set to miss out on reported target Stephan Ambrosius, according to Hamburger Morgenpost.

Could COVID-19 force Leeds United to do business in January?

Last month, GHANAsoccernet reported that the Whites attempted to sign Ambrosius over the summer transfer window, but could not complete a deal for the Hamburg centre-back.

The 21-year-old is out of contract at the German club at the end of the 2020/21 season, but after a strong start to the campaign in the second tier, the defender wants to stay put for now.

The report claims that the club and the player have "grown closer in talks" over a new deal, and are hopeful it can be done.

Orta confirms interest in Luis

Leeds' Director of Football Victor Orta has revealed the club were interested in signing Benfica midfielder Florentino Luis.

The Whites were reportedly keen on Luis - who has since joined Monaco on loan from the Portuguese side - and Orta has now confirmed this.

The Leeds chief told Record: "Yes, we liked him, but Benfica wanted to loan him out to get minutes.

"And in that position Kalvin Phillips plays, a reference and player of the Leeds academy. It was an operation from which no one would benefit."

Robinson tips Leeds to sign midfielder

Ex-Leeds goalkeeper Paul Robinson has backed his former club to sign a central midfielder in the January transfer window.

Kalvin Phillips has been out injured since the 1-0 defeat to Wolves last month, and Robinson thinks Bielsa needs to sign a replacement.

“Now Ben White has gone, he [Bielsa] is really struggling to find someone who can fill in there. He’s played Klich there, he’s played Struijk there, he’s rotated during the games and he’s still nowhere near finding the perfect solution.

“Phillips is an absolutely vital player for Leeds and the way they play, and if they are going to be without him for any length of time they are going to have to find a replacement for him in the January window.”
