Leeds United transfer rumours: Kalvin Phillips claims denied, West Brom given 'upper hand'

Leeds United take on Reading this Saturday at Elland Road, after a vital win against Bristol City.

With the Whites now three points clear of third-placed Fulham, they have some much needed breathing room in the race for promotion.

Should they return to the Premier League, it will certainly be a busy summer of arrivals and departures. Here are the latest transfer rumours surrounding the club.

Phillips claims denied

Kalvin Phillips’ agent Kevin Sharp has responded to claims by former Leeds man Michael Brown about a potential release clause in the player’s contract.

Reports earlier this season from the Football Insider suggested that Phillips’ latest deal included a £20million release clause, but Brown recently claimed it to be ‘much more’.

With uncertainty surrounding the future of one of his clients, Sharp decided to respond via Twitter, rubbishing Brown’s claims.

If a bid was to come in for Phillips, Leeds would almost certainly want more than the quoted £20m, given rumours that the player is in line for his first call up to the England squad.

Beckford slams transfer decision

Former Leeds striker Jermaine Beckford says he is ‘baffled’ as to why his former club didn’t make a move to sign Nahki Wells in January.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Beckford said he believes Wells, rumoured to be valued at around £5million, would have been an ideal fit for the Whites given his experience in the Championship:

"To know somebody was available, with Championship experience on the back of scoring how ever many goals he scored was a little bit baffling to myself."

Leeds instead brought in Jean-Kevin Augustin on loan from RB Leipzig for the remainder of the season, but concerns have already been raised about the Frenchman’s fitness.

West Brom given 'upper hand'

Former Leeds United man Noel Whelan has questioned the club's director of football Victor Orta for his decision to sign Augustin in the January transfer window ahead of Callum Robinson.

Augustin is yet to make an impact at Elland Road after signing on loan from RB Leipzig and Whelen believes a move should have been made for Robinson, who joined West Brom, instead.

“I think we missed a trick in not signing him. He knows the league, a good strong player, West Brom saw it and we did not," he told Football Insider.

“We need a player like Robinson – ready to go and banging goals in. They got the upper hand on that. They signed a player ready [for action].”
