Leeds United transfer round-up: Wigan starlet tipped to follow Joe Gelhardt, Lovro Majer latest

It’s been a successful weekend for Leeds United, with Marcelo Bielsa’s men beating Aston Villa 3-0 and summer addition Raphinha on target for the Under-23s against Norwich City.

Record signing Rodrigo Moreno played a prominent role in the big win at Villa Park and the impact made by the club's new recruits has underlined the importance of evolving and improving in the transfer market as rumours and gossip continue for potential future signings.

There’s still two months until the January window opens, but there are already suggestions Leeds will look to do business mid-season, while new details continue to emerge about the players Leeds signed and missed out on in the summer.

With all that said, here’s all the latest Leeds transfer news and gossip.

Wigan starlet tipped to follow Gelhardt to Elland Road

Highly-rated Wigan Athletic academy star Sean McGurk has been tipped to sign for Leeds in January, according to The Sun.

The 17-year-old midfielder is yet to make a first-team appearance for John Sheridan’s Latics but has caught the eye of scouts for his performances in their youth set-up.

He could be the next player to leave the ailing club after they went into administration, prompting a firesale of their most prized assets, including striker Joe Gelhardt.

Gelhardt made 21 first-team appearances for Wigan before arriving at Elland Road in a cut-price deal in August.

The 18-year-old has continued his development with regular appearances for Mark Jackson’s Under-23s, and it’s believed that the same strategy would be in place for McGurk.

Leeds target tipped to make Sheffield United return

Chris Wilder will push to bring Bournemouth midfielder and reported Leeds target David Brooks back to Sheffield United in January, according to the Sheffield Star.

The 23-year-old Wales international first broke through at Bramall Lane during the 2017/18, making 33 appearances for Wilder’s side, with his first senior goal coming away at Leeds in October 2017, an 81st-minute match-winner in a 2-1 victory.

He moved to Bournemouth the following summer, subsequently caught the eye in the Premier League, and was tipped to leave the Cherries after their relegation.

He has stayed at the club for now but remains the source of constant speculation, while Leeds were a number of sides said to have been interested in his signature before the transfer window closed earlier this month.

Latest details on Majer pursuit

Earlier this week, Leeds emerged on the list of potential suitors for rising Croatian star Lovro Majer.

The 22-year-old Dinamo Zagreb playmaker has drawn comparisons to Luka Modric, and is reportedly also on the radar of AC Milan, Fiorentina, Borussia Dortmund, Valencia, and Sevilla.

The latest, according to Italian outlet Calciomercato, is that Leeds have “taken information” on Majer, who is keen to move away from the Croatian capital and test himself in a major European league.

The Whites have a relationship with Dinamo after their offer for Josko Gvardiol in the summer, but their new transfer target wouldn’t come cheap – he remains contracted at the club until 2023.
