Leeds United transfer news: promotion rivals deadline day blow, Poveda backing

Leeds United's promotion assault took another damaging blow at the weekend as the Whites were beaten 1-0 by lowly Wigan Athletic at Elland Road.

After producing a remarkable comeback against Millwall last Tuesday, it was hoped that Leeds would have been able to carry that momentum into Saturday's meeting with the Latics.

But the story of Leeds' season came to fruition once again, with them dominating the game but doing so without finding the back of the net.

Leeds' inability to find the back of the net meant that they have now failed to score in three of their last four league games, which has resulted in the fans calling on head coach Marcelo Bielsa to unleash new signing Jean-Kevin Augustin in a bid to solve their goal-scoring woes.

Augustin was one of three new signings at Elland Road in January, and despite the window now having slammed shut, rumours about the summer window are already starting to appear.

Here, we round-up the day's very latest Leeds transfer news...

Leeds keeping tabs on Koch

The Yorkshire Evening Post are reporting that Leeds are keeping a watchful eye on Freiburg centre-back Robin Koch.

Koch, who is 23, has impressed in the Bundesliga this season and it is claimed that Leeds are keeping an eye on his progress.

The defender, who joined Freiburg from FC Kaiserslautern in August 2017, has already been capped for Germany, making two appearances.

Whites pipped by Championship rivals in race for Oxford star

Leeds were beaten to the signing of highly-rated Oxford United midfielder Shandon Baptiste by fellow Championship club Brentford, report HITC.

Baptiste, alongside Oxford teammate Tariq Fosu, completed a deadline day move to Griffin Park for a combined fee thought to be between £3m-£4m.

But the report also claims that Leeds were in the running for Baptiste, as were Scottish giants Rangers and Celtic.

Robinson's great feeling about Poveda

Whilst Leeds' supporters cannot wait to catch a first glimpse of Augustin for the first-team, the same can be said for fellow new recruit Ian Poveda.

The young winger joined Leeds from Manchester City in January and is yet to be handed his debut by Bielsa.

Speaking to MOT Leeds News, former Whites goalkeeper Paul Robinson has revealed that he has high hopes for the 19-year-old.

Robinson said: “I’ve seen Poveda play a couple of times and I like him a lot.

"He’s a really creative player, he’s played for the Man City first team and there’s real talent there."
