Leeds United transfer meeting imminent to bring an end to £27m experiment and 'fix issues'

Wheels could start moving on the transfer of Rodrigo out of Leeds United in the coming days as his agent meets with the Elland Road hierarchy. The 32-year-old is expected to be one of the most likely departures from the Whites after relegation last month.

Rodrigo, a club-record signing in 2020, endured a challenging first two seasons with United, but blossomed in year three under Jesse Marsch. The striker’s 15 goals in 35 appearances across all competitions left you wondering about the club’s ultimate fate had he not missed five weeks through injury.

Even after his wages were sliced by around half after the drop, Rodrigo remains one of the highest earners at Elland Road. With one year left on his deal and an excellent season behind him, United are unlikely to make it difficult for him to leave.

Rodrigo’s agent, his father Adalberto Machado, has now spoken to Spanish newspaper ABC and confirmed he will meet with Leeds in the near future. At the time of writing, there had been no firm interest in Rodrigo lodged with the Whites.

“We have nothing firm,” said Machado. “I have known these days of interest, but not concrete. I have an appointment now with the people of the club (Leeds). We are going to fix all those issues and we will know soon.”

Victor Orta’s recent appointment at mid-table La Liga outfit Sevilla has prompted rumours of a reunion with Rodrigo. While Machado talked up Sevilla as an option he stopped short of saying anything was certain.

“There is nothing fixed, but Sevilla, always,” he said. “Sevilla will always be a team that will have our interest, obviously.”

Rodrigo only began his post-season holiday this week after playing his part in Spain’s Nations League victory on Sunday in the Netherlands.
