Leeds United transfer links show Liverpool's best and brightest were watching U23 title win

An occupational hazard of successful youth teams is that they are often broken up, harvested by lesser clubs with lofty ambitions.

Leeds United's title-winning U23s will be no different after their PL2 Division 2 success last term.

Already, links have begun to emerge concerning the protagonists of that victory.

Blackpool are rumoured to be interested in moving for U23s centre-back Olly Casey, who has proved his EFL candidacy through years of development at the Leeds United academy.

The Seasiders claimed promotion back to the Championship with a play-off final win over Lincoln City last month.

Headed up by former Liverpool U23s coach Neil Critchley and under new ownership, Blackpool are a club on the up.

This past season, the club relied on Everton's U23 striker Ellis Simms to fire them to play-off glory, while Arsenal's Daniel Ballard marshalled the defence.

These two loanees were instrumental in Blackpool's promotion, and while retaining them will be a different matter altogether, it shows the club have utilised Critchley's knowledge of the U23 circuit well.

Critchley became Liverpool U18s boss in 2013, holding that position for four years, before taking on the role of U23s manager, a post he held for a further three seasons.

Working at one of the country's most well-endowed clubs in scouting and recruitment, Critchley knows a thing or two about signing the right type of young players.

He has brought this expertise with him to the Lancashire coast, and now with a Championship campaign to contend with, has supposedly enquired about 20-year-old Casey.

Last season, Casey featured in a very functional centre-back role for Mark Jackson's U23s side.

Alongside captain Charlie Cresswell, Casey was a regular - and a reliable one at that.

Physically, he is already up to the task of an EFL move, unlike some players his age. This is often the first and most immediate barrier to entry for standout U23s; making the jump from reserve football to representing a senior side in a lower division.

Casey was also named in eleven of Marcelo Bielsa's matchday squads last year, indicating the Argentine has already deemed him up to code in that regard, making two appearances in domestic cup competitions.

The 20-year-old featured in 21 of 24 available games for the U23s too - one of Jackson's most relied-upon players.

In the three fixtures Casey was not involved, Leeds failed to keep a clean sheet.

Leeds may well be more open to agreeing a Casey sale given the wealth of options at centre-back.

Diego Llorente, Robin Koch, Pascal Struijk and club captain Liam Cooper remain ahead in the pecking order, while there are high hopes for Casey's U23s centre-back partner Charlie Cresswell.

Nevertheless, a move at this point in time may certainly be better suited to Casey, who is a year Cresswell's senior, suggesting the latter requires more experience of youth football.

Should Casey complete a permanent transfer, regular Championship football at 20 years old, working under a coach renowned for developing young players, would be challenging but hugely beneficial to the development of his fledgling senior career.
