Leeds United transfer interest in Todd Cantwell dismissed as agent ploy

Leeds United's transfer links in Todd Cantwell has been dismissed as more of an attempt by his agent to drum up interest rather than anything serious.

The Whites had been strongly reported to be in for the Norwich City star.

But despite weeks of supposed interest, there has yet to be an official bid made for the highly-rated midfielder.

Cantwell is one of several fine talents at Carrow Road - some of which have already left.

After Norwich's relegation, they have been facing a battle to keep some of the best stars.

Ben Godfrey has departed for Everton while Jamal Lewis has joined Newcastle, and there was even interest in Max Aarons from Barcelona.

Another name on the potential exit list is Cantwell, who has been linked with a return to the Premier League.

Leeds were one supposed suitor but ex-United striker Noel Whelan has opened up on what he has heard around his former club.

He told Football Insider : “From what I have heard, was it Cantwell’s agent that was pushing that one? That is what I’ve been hearing on the grapevine.

“Leeds might be interested in him, but they weren’t desperate for him.

“It’s more his agent pushing that one.

“If he did come to Leeds we’d be getting a very good young player and we know Marcelo Bielsa likes that. But it obviously wasn’t his first port of call.

"There were other irons in the fire that he was looking at.

“Raphinha, I’m sure he was looking at and monitoring for quite a while now.”

With the EFL transfer window still open, it remains to be seen whether Leeds will make a move for Cantwell.

The Elland Road outfit have been active in the transfer window already and have spent nearly £100m in a bid to stay in the Premier League.

And whether the can splash any more cash remains to be seen after failing to offload any players over the summer.

Kalvin Phillips has caught the eye of some of the Premier League big boys but Marcelo Bielsa sees the England international as vital to his tactical system.
