Leeds United told to rethink summer transfer plan as Leicester City flex European advantage

This summer, Leeds United have a handful of transfer priorities which will need to be assessed.

Left-back appears to be a position of some importance with uncertainty still reigning over Ezgjan Alioski's Elland Road future.

The longer the Macedonian international delays on signing a new contract, the more likely it appears he will depart West Yorkshire next month as a free agent.

Elsewhere on the pitch, Leeds United's No. 8 position is one which could be bolstered following the failed move for Michael Cuisance last summer.

It is an area which Leeds were keen to supplement, hence the advanced negotiations for Cuisance which eventually fell through.

Similarly, Stuart Dallas' rebirth in that role towards the end of this season suggests Marcelo Bielsa has not been entirely satisfied with the more natural options at his disposal in that area of the field.

Consequently, links have arisen to various footballers across Europe's major leagues, in particular France.

Leeds United are known to scour the French market well, having picked up Illan Meslier and Raphinha for a combined total of around £23 million.

This summer, Premier League rivals Leicester City could have drawn first blood in that arena, as according to French outlet RMC, Boubakary Soumare is on the verge of joining the Foxes in a €23 million deal.

Brendan Rodgers' side were the other team persistently named alongside Leeds United when Soumare's name was floated in transfer rumour circles - and it appears they may have tempted their man with European football.

Soumare won Ligue 1 with Lille OSC this season, beating Paris Saint-Germain to the title on the final day of the season.

In the Premier League, Leicester were left disappointed with a place in the UEFA Europa League despite occupying a Champions League spot for the majority of the season.

The 22-year-old midfielder is also said to have turned down a move to Newcastle United during the 2019/20 campaign, a club who also do not boast participation in European competition.

Whilst there was never confirmation that Leeds were interested in the midfielder who can also play as a No. 6, he is an individual who doubtless would have been on Victor Orta's radar given his encyclopaedic knowledge of European football and a network of diligent scouts.

If Leeds are to add a hybrid midfielder who can deputise for Kalvin Phillips, whilst also fulfilling Mateusz Klich's brief, they may be forced to search elsewhere, should Leicester manage to get this deal over the line.
