Leeds United told that sacking Marcelo Bielsa would be a 'mistake' amid speculation

Former West Ham United forward Frank McAvennie believes that sacking Marcelo Bielsa would be a 'huge mistake' amid links surrounding a possible departure from Leeds United.

The Whites currently sit just outside the relegation zone having won just three Premier League matches this season and head into the trip to Liverpool on Boxing Day without an away victory in four games.

However, Bielsa's side have had a number of injuries and were without the likes of Kalvin Phillips, Liam Cooper, Patrick Bamford for the 4-1 defeat against Arsenal last time out.

Spain international Rodrigo also missed the game through a foot issue, while Diego Llorente, who has been vital since returning to the side, sat out with illness.

This has been a common theme throughout the campaign and McAvennie admitted that the Whites have been unfortunate with the amount of injuries they've had but also claimed that Bielsa is still the right man for the job.

"Leeds have had absolutely no luck this season," McAvennie told Football Insider.

“Some people will argue it’s Bielsa who is getting his players injured but this hasn’t happened during his previous time at the club.

"He’s been given some horrible luck and all you have to do is look at the bench against Arsenal. It was all 15 and 16-year-olds for god's sake. He’s never been able to play his strongest side.

"I just look and I don’t see anyone who could come into Leeds and do a better job than Bielsa.

"If there is a man to turn the ship around, it's him. The man is a legend there, he has earned the chance to keep Leeds up.

"I think he probably will as well, then he can walk at the end of the season. I think sacking him would be horrible, a huge mistake."

There had been reports that Bielsa was under an increased amount of pressure following the Whites' recent slump in form after losing against Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal.

However, the support the Argentine has received from the Leeds faithful suggests that they are fully behind him to turn their fortunes around heading into the second half of the season.

After the Whites' trip to Anfield, they host Steven Gerrard's Aston Villa on Tuesday, December 28, before facing Burnley at Elland Road in the New Year.
